Evoe and Mary Knox
Flower Festival 2012:
Arranged by Peggy Agnew in memory of Mary Knox.
E V Knox (1881 – 1971) was the son of a Bishop of Coventry and later Manchester and grandson of a Bishop of Lahore; brother of Ronald Knox, the theologian and writer, and father of Penelope Fitzgerald.
As a well-know essayist and poet he contributed numerous articles to the ‘Punch’ magazine. He was editor of ‘Punch’ from 1932-1949. He lived at 34 Well Walk and later at 110 Frognal
In 1937 he married his second wife…..
Mary Shepard (1909 – 2000) daughter of E H Shepard, a ‘Punch’ cartoonist, and illustrator of ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ and ‘The Wind in the Willows’. Mary Shepard was herself an illustrator who is best known for illustrating ‘Mary Poppins’, a series of seven books by P L Travers.
After her husband’s death in 1971 Mary moved to The Heights, 97 Frognal.
I chose to celebrate the lives of Evoe and Mary Knox because my family had a connection with ‘Punch’ magazine.
