Prof Henry Briggs
OBE, FRSE. Professor of Mining at Ednburgh University and at Heriot-Watt College. He was involved in research for safety in mines and invented mine rescue apparatus. Published many books and learned papers.

Stopford Brooke
Irish minister of Proprietory chapel, Bloomsbury, 1876-95. A celebrated preacher, in 1867 he became chaplain to Queen Victoria, but he seceded from the Anglican church in 1880. He often preached at Rosslyn Hill chapel. Most successful among his books was his Primer of English Literature, 1876.
Leonard Leslie Brooke
Artist and illustrator. Created the popular Johnny Crow books for children and illustrated many nursery rhyme books. He married Sybil (1890-1957), daughter of Stopford Brooke. John ‘Senior’ Burlison
Son of a Durham joiner, who became personal assistant to Sir George Gilbert Scott for 25 years. His son, qv, was a stained glass maker.
Thomas Bush
Headmaster of Heath Mount School in Heath Street until c.1875. The school history says he was fond of wielding a ‘bushy’ stick.
