Born in 1934, Richard lived most of his life in Hampstead. He attended University College School until he was 16 years, and wishing to do pure maths, he moved to St Paul’s School for A Levels, before entering Hertford College Oxford, and obtaining a double first in mathematics.

He lived in Frognal within sight of the church, and was a great supporter of all local events. Richard was a country man at heart, loving his garden, a real plants man,  at one time keeping bees. All country sports attracted him, he was passionate about his dogs, and fishing was his great relaxation.

He had a long and happy marriage to Judith Mary Swindells. They had four boys. Judith died in 1997.

In 1999 he married Lady Caroline Burnett Armstrong, moving to Gloucestershire, and replenishing a tired and beautiful garden.
