Sir Walter Besant (1836 - 1901)
Novelist, antiquarian, social reformer. Resident at several addresses, notably Frognal End in Frognal Gardens [blue plaque]. His grave is a listed monument. Besant’s socially conscious novels prompted the establishment of the People’s Palace in Mile End.
